Hey everybody,

As some of you may already have picked up on, the core mages of Cyrus will be switching to fire for the next few weeks, in preparation for phase 5. This thread will be used to provide every mage in Cyrus with information in regards to fire and what you should look out for. Enjoy the read and as always, let me know if you have any questions or comments.

Joining a Cyrus raid on a mage alt
If you would like to join a raid on one of your mage alts, then it is highly recommended to also specc fire, as your damage will highly rely on other mages using the same school of spells as yourself. You can still opt to play Arcane-frost (so no deep frost w/ Winter's Chill, as we can't afford the debuff slot), if you'd like, but your damage will likely be gimped.

The build
Talents:
Taking several fire immune bosses into account in MC and BWL (current primary content), all core mages will be running this frost-fire hybrid build:
https://classic.wowhead.com/talent-calc/mage/2-5052000123033151-05350003 with the exception of Flame Throwing (fire row 2), those two points you can put somewhere differently if you'd like.

Stats:
As stats will differ depending on your gear, here's a stat weight calculator for fire mages:
https://github.com/ronkuby-mage/fire-mage-simulation

The Gameplay
Ignite:
Ignite is a debuff with a 4 second duration which stacks up to 5 times and does damage every 2 seconds while active. Ignite will be refreshed if any mage with the ignite talent crits with a fire spell during that 4 second duration. Ignite damage is based on the first 5 fire spell crits creating the stack at a rate of 40% of each spell crits' damage (Power Infusion and Sayge's Dark Fortune of Damage apply to both the initial spells' damage and the damage of ignite effectively double dipping on ignite damage)

Improved Scorch (Fire vulnerability):
Fire Vulnerability is a debuff that stacks to 5, increasing damage taken from fire spells by 3% per stack (15% at full stacks), it has a duration of 30sec and is applied by scorch with the improved scorch talent.

Rotation:
The fire rotation will vary depending on the number of mages in your raid team but will generally consist of applying 5 stacks of fire vulnerability with scorch and then using either fire blast, frostbolt, or pyroblast as a means to allow any crits from scorch to drop. After the initial scorch application and ignite stack drop the rotation will be to fireball while at least one mage in the raid keeps up the fire vulnerability debuff prior to it falling off. When your mana gets low you can use scorch instead of fireball to conserve mana.

Ignite's threat:
If threat from the ignite stack gets too high you can have every mage in your raid cast frostbolt to allow the ignite to drop and then reapply the ignite stack with fireball and continue the normal rotation.

Additional fire notes
Because ignite snapshots buffs on the last mage to add a stack the optimal goal is to have the last stack of ignite added by a mage with PI/DMF and max buffs active (AP does not double dip). This has lead to some work around ideal openers for buffing ignite. Such as having mages with PI/MQG/Combustion up front doing a normal rotation and having the Non PI mages casts 2-5 frostbolts after their scorch to prevent any fire crits without PI/Buffs from being added last. Additionally this means that if the last stack of ignite added (fifth) has a partial resist it will continue to be resisted for its duration and must be allowed to drop off and restarted to fix this issue. Mage teams will likely need a weak aura to keep close track of the status of their ignite and scorch debuff and call for resets if needed.

Threat:
Many people are concerned about the threat fire mages will generate as it is concentrated on the mage that owns the ignite (first crit). A perfect ignite stack is unlikely to be generated and equally unlikely to be ranked successfully. Always have a good supply of LIPs which will give you 6 additional seconds off the threat table (as soon as it’s over the boss will still kill you). This can be followed by BoP if alliance side. Other suggestions include flask of petrification (these are expensive and will erase your prior flask). The final option is a quick and simple death. If you die the ignite is still credited to you for both damage and threat and it strongly benefits your mages to keep it rolling to avoid further threat issues.

Combustion:
Guarantees 3 crit Fire spells by stacking 10% crit for any non crit Fire spells. Best used either up front to help stack ignite or staggered during fight to help prolong ignite.

Slightly amended the additional fire notes to better suit the Cyrus raid set-up, as the text is a copy paste from the mage Discord.

Hey core mages,

Here's some Q&A regarding fire practice:

Q: Will we stay fire permanently from now on?
A: No, after practice, we will go back to frost. Whether this will be Arcane Power frost or open frost speccs, is yet to be determined. We will return to frost to allow for easier talent splashing into AoE and PvP builds.

Q: Until when do we keep practising fire?
A: Definitely stay fire for this coming Blackwing Lair raid. After that, we can evaluate our current performance as fire and whether more fire practice in MC and BWL has any merit. tl;dr: end date not decided yet, so stay fire for now.

Q: what's the gear BiS list for fire going into AQ?
A: Nouska is on the case! Keep an eye out on the Mage Classic Discord too. :) (https://discord.gg/tEdQhsH )

Q: Mirror mirror on the wall, who's the prettiest of them all?
A: Prawni of course. Nothing beats those slippers with white socks!

General notes:
-Do keep bringing https://classic.wowhead.com/item=3387/limited-invulnerability-potion to the raids. Between 5 and 10 should do the trick. Mats can be easily farmed in Maraudon - Princess side.
-If you're looking to obtain Bloodvine for your set, ping me on Discord.

Stay frosty! Wait.. no... f*ck...

-Jori

Hey wizards,

Now that we've played fire for two weeks and saw how the specc works on a general level, I think it's time to say a temporary good bye to fire and go back to frost. WIth the current kill speed of bosses in MC and the lack of fire-vulnerable bosses in BWL, I think another one or two weeks of practice isn't going to get us a lot more knowledge. Unless somebody explicity is against going back to frost and brings good arguments to the table, it is now decided that come Sunday May 31st, we'll be frost again as a team.

For now frost will be played the same as before:
-I will be the main WC mage, however, we need a substitute WC mage for next raid week, as I'll be away. Any volunteers? :)
-Open specc for Molten Core, same rules apply as Maitai wrote back in the day
-PvE specc for Blackwing Lair (i.e. Arcane Power). We're currently discussing opening up speccs for BWL as well, so look out for an update on this soon.

Please keep gathering any fire and NR gear you need for Phase 5, get yourself a 1.5 speed or lower frost wand (mandatory!!) and don't forget about the Naxx guild vault. The vault is already open to gold and Titans material donations! :)
